研究指出，葉酸對胎兒初期的發育非常重要，但是很多女性通常都不是馬上就會注意到自己已經懷孕了。不充足的葉酸會導致胎兒腦和脊椎神經發育不正常，甚至畸形。美國的疾病管理中心就建議，女性平時應該攝取足夠的葉酸，大於官方建議的使用量的2.5倍，以避免懷孕時帶給胎兒不良的影響。
